Brett Manning Teaches Vocal Health – Take Care of Your Singing Voice by Eating
In this video about vocal health, legendary vocal instructor Brett Manning discusses an area that he feels many singers neglect – nutrition to help their voice. If a singer is not healthy, they cannot sing!
Nutrition plays a key role in how a voice sounds as well as how well the throat and vocal cords work together when trying to sing. With too much mucous, it can be difficult to reach higher notes or get a clear tone at all. With too little, the throat and cords will be very dry. So finding the right nutritional balance is the key to having a better singing voice day in and day out.
One day a person might sing great, but the next day they can barely sing at all due to unhealthy lifestyle and/or poor eating habits. Conditions such as acid reflux, sinus problems and allergies, smoking/drinking, etc. can affect the voice severely.
Brett suggests a singer should take control of their singing voice by noticing how eating certain foods or doing certain activities affects their voice. For singers to develop a clearer voice, he recommends eating lots of vegetables, lean meats, eggs, and to avoid hot, spicy foods. Sometimes a vocalist might want a gruff voice and eat foods that produce more mucous which is essential to vocal health.
Take measures to decrease episodes of acid reflux, which can cause excessive mucous production while sleeping, making it very difficult to clear the throat in the mornings for singing or talking.
