How
Eating Affects Your Singing
Voice
What You Should Eat and
Avoid Before Singing
Believe it or not, the foods
that you eat before singing can actually help you
or hurt you. When you sing you use your diaphragm
and if you are full or eat the wrong food this may
make it hard to take in full deep breaths.
This is not to say that you
should starve yourself, you should eat a meal
approximately two hours before singing. It is
important to eat and keep up your strength
especially when you are learning to sing.
So what should you be eating
before singing? You should eat a light meal and
stay away from heavy foods that can interfere with
the breathing techniques that you will need to use
to hit those high notes.
You should also stay away
from dairy products because they can cause mucus to
accumulate in your throat making it difficult
breathe. Dairy can also make you feel like you need
to constantly clear your throat.
Whether you are singing
professionally or singing karaoke it is important
to watch what you eat before singing. You should
drink a lot of water to keep yourself and your
vocal chords well hydrated.
Caffeinated drinks should be
avoided because these drinks will dry your mouth
out. Carbonated products should also not be
consumed because they produce too much air in your
stomach making it difficult to sing the notes.
Citrus fruits should be
avoided as well, they also tend to dry out the
throat. Drinks should be warm not cold because the
cold will cause your throat to constrict making it
seem like you are trying to swallow when you are
singing.
Foods that you should eat
include chicken, fish, almonds, eggs, and rice.
Lukewarm drinks can help soothe your throat before
singing. Salt water, hard candy, and honey can also
help your throat. Some tips to start singing is to
watch what you are eating and drinking, this will
help bring out the natural talent in your voice.
As I said earlier, proper
breathing is crucial to your voice. If you are just
starting out and want to try out for junior
auditions you will want your voice to be in tip top
shape. Keeping your throat and vocal chords in good
condition will help you to sing those scales that
you are reaching for.
Avoiding certain foods,
keeping yourself hydrated, and eating a light meal
an hour or two before performing should help your
voice reach its potential.
