Tips
for How to Sing with Allergies
If You are a Singer with an
Allergy, Be Sure and Read This!
Singing well requires you to
have a consistent voice quality, and sometimes this
is really difficult, such as when you are sick or
have allergies.
Allergies can cause a build
up of mucus, coughing, and swollen throat muscles,
all of which make it hard for you to sing (and
sometimes even to breathe). You need to learn how
to deal with the problems so that you can keep
singing even during allergy season if you are one
of the unlucky people suffering from this
condition. There are a number of different tips
that can help with allergy problems.
Some Remedies
First of all, although
tempting, you should probably avoid most over the
counter allergy products since they will dry you
out, which might then just cause you to produce
more mucus again. You can speak with your doctor to
see if he or she has any recommendations. It really
depends on the cause of the allergies since some
can be avoided and others are present in so many
places it is hard to avoid them.
Many people suggest home
remedies to help those singing with allergies.
These include getting a lot of fluids and vitamin
C, eating healthily and avoiding caffeine, and
taking steam baths (or holding your head over a
bowl of steaming water) in order to loosen up the
mucus caused by the allergies. Herbal teas and
supplements can sometimes help as well.
With all the time you
probably spend practicing scales and working on
improving voice quality and breathing techniques,
you don't want to end up singing with allergies and
messing up your ability to reach the high notes
when you have junior auditions or when you are
entering local talent or karaoke competitions. For
this reason it is important to find a treatment (or
better yet, a way to prevent them in the first
place) for your condition.
