Using
the Best Body Posture While Singing
How You Stand Affects the
Way You Sound
In order to get the best
performance from your voice, it is important to
maintain the best posture for singing. Singing
exercises the voice just as running exercises other
parts of the body.
This is why a good voice
instructor will work on improving your voice,
provide you with helpful tips, and insist that you
practice your scales often. The best way to develop
a talent is to practice often. You can practice in
a class, with a choir, or even while performing
karaoke.
While practicing, try to
stand and hold your body correctly; this maximizes
the effect you will get from your voice.
Watch Your
Breathing
As with any other exercise
that benefits the body, it is essential you begin
with proper breathing techniques and warming up
your voice.
Singing Warmup
Scales
Warming up the voice involves
going through the range of scales from high notes
to low notes. With a class or alone, you should
practice the best posture for singing.
How to Stand
Pay attention to where your
feet are. They should be shoulder width apart with
one foot in front of the other slightly. Both legs
should be holding an even amount of weight, but
more toward your toes than your heels.
To assume the proper posture,
roll forward onto your tiptoes and then roll back,
but do not let your heels completely meet the
floor.
The knees are very important
too. Your knees must not be locked. Raise
your chest in order to maintain a tilt to your
ribcage. Warm up your shoulders by lifting them to
your ears and down until you settle them in a
relaxed position.
Shake out your arms and align
your chin parallel to the floor. It is helpful to
learn these techniques while you are young.
You will increase your vocal
talent and gain more confidence for junior
auditions, local contests, etc. Posture can speak
volumes while your voice is performing. It's called
body language and an audience (or judges in a
competition ) will be reading the language as much
as listening to you sing.
Stay tuned in to what you are
saying to your audience through the words you sing
and the posture you maintain. Capture the audiences
full attention with your talent and your heart.
They will appreciate your extra effort.
