Top 10 Singing Tips for Success
Do you want to learn to sing better? Here are the top 10 singing tips for success. And remember – this music advice only works if you do!
1. Work on Posture
You might not realize this, but your body’s posture can greatly affect your ability to sing due to the close proximity of the lungs, rib cage, spine, etc. Practice standing/sitting tall while remaining relaxed in your breathing. If you don’t have good posture, your spine, shoulders, neck, etc. might take a little while to adjust.
2. Breathe Deeply
Breathing is a key element in successful singing. Learn to breathe deeply so that your lower abdomen area moves in and out instead of your chest.
This means you are taking deep, relaxing breaths instead of panting as if you just ran a marathon. Practice breathing through your nose only while singing and notice how much easier it is to breathe this way. Most singing tips and lessons start with teaching the student breathing exercises.
3. Relax Muscles in Your Face
Don’t strain your facial muscles while singing. This can cause your entire head and neck to tense up and hinder your singing voice as well. Relax as much as possible so that your voice flows naturally.
4. Don’t Sing to the Point of Pain
Whether trying to sing a song that’s higher than usual or attempting to sing with a sore throat, you shouldn’t sing if it’s going to cause pain. Also, avoid singing so much that your voice becomes hoarse. This can damage your vocal cords in a hurry!
5. Think About It!
Don’t just sing while reading the lyrics from your sheet music. Learn to “think” your way through the songs. Memorize the words so you can practice singing without reading the lyrics. Some singers say that their mind goes blank when they get up on stage…don’t let this happen to you. Practice as if you are performing without paper in hand.
6. Avoid Practicing Too Much
Practice is necessary for gaining ground when it comes to singing, but you can also practice too much. Don’t overdo it. Your vocal cords should be allowed time to rest before and after a performance.
7. Practice Overcoming Breaks or Bridges in Your Voice
Never assume that your voice can’t sing any higher. There are numerous singing tips and courses online to help you reach a higher range through simple exercises. When your voice breaks or bridges when trying to go to a higher note, then consider this a challenge to try and reach a new level of singing.
8. Find Some Helpful Singing Exercises
Singing exercises can help you build vocal strength, reach a new octave and improve overall singing techniques. Try to do your vocal exercises daily for a week or two to see how your voice improves. A “before and after” recording can be used to compare.
9. Choose Suitable Songs for Your Voice
Find songs that you can sing comfortably. Most songs can be sung in various keys so you can find what works for you. Make sure you can hit all the notes without strain to ensure an optimal performance.
10. Build Confidence
Getting up to sing in front of a crowd can be a little intimidating at first. Start with your own family, no matter how many live in your home. You might have a group of two or five depending on how many children. Ask them to give honest feedback after each performance. This can help condition you (and your voice) for the real events.
