10 Tips for Private Singing Lessons

If you’re considering private singing lessons, there are some facts you should know before signing on.  Don’t rush into this decision.

Having the right voice instructor can help you tremendously in reaching your goals.  But hiring the wrong teacher can result in disaster for years to come!  Singing lessons are supposed to help you develop a great voice for the long term.  So consider these 10 tips before selecting a training venue.

1.  Determine if you want private singing lessons locally or online.

You can hire a private voice coach either way, but which you choose will depend on your needs and schedule.  An online instructor may be more flexible; however, a local instructor gives the one-on-one training experience you may need to maximize your experience.

2.  Check with local music stores.

Music stores often keep a list of folks offering private singing lessons.  Some stores have someone on staff that gives lessons. The clerk may also share with you any positive or negative feedback received about the instructor.

3.  Ask for credentials and references.

Any good voice instructor should be able to provide both.  Ask if any students have went on to be successful in a singing career.  Find out if other students can be contacted so you can get feedback on training style and methods as well as mannerisms.

4.  Scan local classified ads to find local or online private singing lessons.

Some vocal instructors might offer a sign-up special so you can get started without breaking the bank. If all else is equal, searching for discount classes is certainly an option to consider.

5.  Ask friends for recommendations.

Perhaps you know someone at school or work who has taken singing lessons. He/she might be able to recommend a great instructor to fit your budget and needs.

6.  Contact a local music school.

Music school students are sometimes equipped to offer private singing lessons based on the knowledge gained while in school.  Or the music school might offer one-on-one lessons after class.

7.  Ask questions.

Find out what the instructor’s teaching methods are beforehand.  What approach is used for voice lessons?  Does the instructor specialize in a certain style of singing?  Will you learn about breathing techniques?

8.  Know the schedule.

Make sure the private singing lessons and required practice will fit your schedule.  If you work long hours, you might not be able to attend at certain times during the week.  Some instructors might offer voice training during weekends while others do not.

9.  Consider the pricing and payment options.

Private singing lessons can be costly, so it’s important to find out all costs involved up front.  Ask about payment plans, or if you can pay as you go for each lesson.  Some might require quarterly or yearly payments up front.

10. Take inventory.

What do you wish to learn during your private singing lessons?  Do you wish to pursue a career in singing or use your voice at volunteer functions or at your church?  You should make a list of what you expect to achieve from the singing lessons and share your goals with the instructor before getting started.
